At First United Methodist Church, Children’s Ministries understands the importance of ensuring that the next generation, our children, are formed as Christians for the 21st century. Together with parents, families, caregivers, and teachers, from birth through 5th grade, children are encouraged to

  •  Understand the Bible
  • Practice their faith
  • Experience community

Our Sunday school program runs yearlong during both services except for 5th Sundays where families stay together in Worship.  Preschool Sunday school, however, continues on 5th Sundays. Other opportunities for children include

  •  Vacation Bible School
  • Children’s Christmas program
  • Neighborhood Carnival
  • Mission drives
  • Nursery care during worship services
  • Bibles for third graders
  • Camp scholarships

The Youth Ministries at First United Methodist Church helps students explore and deepen their faith in ways that empower them to go out and be of service in the world.  The goal is to help youth to discover and develop their faith identities through the support of a loving congregation. We seek to help youth have a safe place to discover who they are as well as the world around them.  As our congregation and  community increasingly become more urban and more diverse, both racially and economically, our youth ministry seeks to address the needs of all young people and their families, both in the church community and in the local urban community.

In this context, we seek to give students (6th-12th grade) the opportunity to grow and experience God together in a variety of ways including

  •  Mission and service projects
  • Worship
  • Confirmation
  • Sunday school
  • Inter-generational studies
  • Neighborhood Carnival

Senior Ministries seeks to engage and empower our seniors by acknowledging their experience and their wisdom. Many of our seniors are active leaders in the church.  Others volunteer their comfort and companionship to shut-ins through a program called Circle of Care. And all are welcome to participate in Xtra Years of Zest (XYZ) providing social interaction and enrichment opportunities for those 50 years and over:

  • Educational local day trips
  • Spiritual growth
  • Worship activities
  • Fall Retreat at Pine Lake
  • Hymn Sings
  • With Youth Ministry, plans for intergenerational dinner
  • More—determined by XYZ members!

XYZ is open to all seniors, whether members of FUMC or not.  Come—and bring a friend-- to enjoy our fellowship on the second Thursday of each month from September through May. We gather at 11:30 AM. We begin promptly at 12:00 noon with tasty food, served potluck style, friendly people and a healthy dose of fun. Bring your favorite gastronomic delight to share. Everything else is furnished.
